Transportation: Houghton’s Pond is not accessible by public transportation. Your support helps us provide transportation for students so everyone can participate—regardless of where they live.
Due to significant school budget cuts, we’re facing a major transportation gap for Rise & Thrive’s summer program at Houghton’s Pond in the Blue Hills Reservation. Last year, we provided a daily bus for students—but this summer, the cost will not be shared and has risen to $500 per day (yellow school bus transportation) which is no longer feasible.
Transportation is more than just a logistical issue—it’s an equity issue. One of the most impactful parts of this program has been introducing students to the incredible natural resource that is the Blue Hills Reservation, just 3–8 miles from their neighborhoods. For many, this program was their first time experiencing this green space due to limited public transit and transportation access. One of our core initiatives is to raise awareness about this gap and ensure all young people can benefit from the physical, mental, and educational benefits of nature.
To continue this vital work, we’re seeking support to help cover transportation costs. Our Executive Director, Joe Cain, will provide some shuttle service in his mini-van, but with a growing number of participants, we may need to supplement with ride-share services or additional support.
