In the summer of 2024, Rise and Thrive Education Inc. partnered with ABCD, University High School, and Boston After School & Beyond to offer an innovative summer program. Thanks to the generous financial support of community members, who donated directly to Rise & Thrive, this experiential, project-based initiative served students from both UHS and Ostiguy High School.
The program was both transformative and impactful, cultivating meaningful shifts in students’ sense of self, goals, and aspirations. It also gave educators new insight into their students’ strengths, creativity, and potential. Below our some highlights!
“I like helping people in customer service. I always like to show great customer hospitality, whether it's funny, caring, loving, just a good tone and good impression. And, I also am here for my credits… working here, you also are working on your math skills, your resume, and marketing. You're working on skills you're gonna need in the future, not just a concession stand. You're not just working with food, it's also communication, patience, organization, reliability” - Q5 student
“Even students who typically experience anxiety or hesitation around trying new things are choosing to opt in and take on the challenge of going to the Pond. That speaks volumes about the trust they feel in this environment. With supportive adults by their side, they’re pushing past their comfort zone.....the growth in confidence we see, even in just a few weeks, is incredible. That’s what I love about this experience -it’s so much more than a summer job and it certainly beats sitting in a typical summer school classroom.”
Joe Cain, BPS Teacher and Founder of Rise & Thrive Education
“I think [this summer] helped me improve academically and improve my mindset on what I want to do after I graduate. It improved not just my productivity but my determination to graduate… it's more flexible than the regular school year and it gave me a sense of what it’s like to work in business and customer service.” - Q5 Student
Rise & Thrive’s Year 2 results demonstrate the power of combining youth voice, real-world learning, and access: through our Q5 model, we achieved 95% attendance rate with our 22 students enrolled in the program. The summer learning opportunity helped 11 seniors reach their goal of graduating in August 2025! Overall there was a palpable increase in engagement as students shifted from passive participants to confident creators.
We invested over $10,000 to provide door-to-door transportation, removing a critical barrier to participation, and will need continued support to sustain and expand this effort as we plan to serve 15 students in Year 3.
At the same time, our advocacy and partnership with DCR led to major revitalization of the historic Houghton’s Pond Pavilion. If you have visited the pond lately you may have noticed the amazing new roof, structural repairs to all the pillars, new gutters and downspouts and a new paint job to complete many steps of a full exterior restoration—advancing a broader effort supported by CPA funding to preserve and reimagine the space as a vibrant, community-centered hub for learning, work, and public access.
Thank you to all of you for your support! We look forward to opening Memorial Day of 2026 and welcoming 15 students to our summer program beginning at the end of June '26!
